Conversations: Doorknobs
I once came across a quote: “Good conversations have lots of doorknobs.” I’m not sure who said it, but it's a useful metaphor for what makes a great conversation. Maybe you’ve had a chat that wandered through different topics and easily meandered, leaving you feeling satisfied and connected. Have you ever wondered how that happens? Sometimes it’s just chemistry, but there are also nuances of conversing that can foster more of these types of conversations in your life. Let’s explore!
Many of the most meaningful conversations happen when we truly feel heard and understood. It's those moments when we share our stories, exchange ideas, and get to be the listener as well. You might recall a special memory of such a conversation. The good news is, it’s not magic. Great conversations rest on some simple fundamentals: engagement, active listening, curiosity, and flexibility. To help illustrate this, I’ll use the doorknob metaphor to guide us through.
Engagement
Imagine engagement like entering a home. Before stepping inside, you must be motivated to do so. It's fundamentally about the mindset you carry into a conversation. While not every interaction requires an extended, meaningful exchange, when that kind of connection is desired, approach it intentionally. Essentially, for those conversations, you need to genuinely want to be involved.
The second aspect of engagement involves recognizing that we can always learn something from others. In mindfulness teachings, there's the idea of “the beginner’s mind.” This concept encourages us to view situations with a fresh, open perspective, similar to a child learning for the first time. As adults, we can cultivate a beginner’s mind by letting go of assumptions and maintaining a curiosity to learn.
Active Listening
Active listening is requisite for meaningful conversations. Instead of focusing on your next response or what to say, simply listen. The secret to effective listening is being fully present. Using the metaphor of doors and doorknobs, we stay in this room for a moment, taking it all in and becoming familiar with its surroundings before opening another door.
Curiosity
Curiosity is all about the doorknobs. When you’re fully present and listen with an active, beginner’s mind, curiosity comes quite naturally. You might find yourself asking questions to understand more, eager to share your stories, or inspired to shift focus if the moment feels right. Curiosity helps you notice and explore what's around you with genuine interest. It’s the spark that keeps conversations lively and enjoyable. Think of curiosity as guiding you through different doors and into new rooms within a conversation, making every exchange more engaging and fun.
Flexibility
Wonder and curiosity truly come alive when conversations are a bit flexible and open. When we try too hard to control the direction, we might miss out on the fun and surprises that come with a natural exchange. Think of conversations like opening doors; each doorknob you turn can reveal something new and exciting. Staying flexible, open, and curious makes the whole journey more enjoyable and full of unexpected delights.
In a world that can sometimes feel a bit too isolating, take a moment to get out there and turn some doorknobs. It’s a small step, but it can make a big difference in connecting with others.
